FC Crotone hit out at Chievo Verona in statement
To say the Italian football system is in crisis right now would be an understatement.
Parma have been punished for match-fixing but their promotion to Serie A remains valid despite protest from Palermo. Had Parma’s points deduction been applied to last season, when the violation took place, Palermo would have been promoted in their place and the Sicilians are not happy that they will stay in Serie B next season.
However, the Parma-Palermo debacle is not the only contentious issue in Serie A this season. FC Crotone, who were relegated from Serie A last season, have accused Chievo Verona of false accounting in a number of deals with Cesena and asked they be relegated from Serie A and Crotone reinstated.
The FIGC threw out the case earlier this summer on a legal technicality but Crotone vowed to appeal the decision.
The appeal will take place on September 12th, after the season has already kicked off. But Crotone have today written to the President of the FIGC to underline the delicacy of the situation but in the open letter they once again attack Chievo calling the side, “a company that repeatedly and violently violated all the rules on the correctness, transparency and veracity of their financial statements.”
In response, Chievo Verona released a website in which the implied they may seek to sue Crotone for defamation saying, “Regarding today’s statements from FC Crotone, Chievo Verona repeats that it has always acted in compliance with all current regulations, especially those relating to its financial statements. So far the FIGC has not contradicted this. Complaints received by the Federal Prosecutor’s Office have not been shared by eminent professionals. Chievo Verona reserves the right to act against FC Crotone for its unacceptable and deeply damaging statements.”
Crotone’s original statement has since been removed from their website but Chievo’s response remains up on their site.
